Laser Treatment for Ethan

My poor baby! In this photo he had just had a laser treatment a few hours earlier. The doctor uses a pulse-dye laser to cauterize the capillaries that make up the port wine stain (the red birthmark).

Travis thought these photos were to sad for the blog but a few of my friends and family said they would like to see them so I'm sorry if it looks too gross.

My kids think he looks like the Phantom of the Opera. The good news is that it will look much better very soon. The burns usually go away within a week. Then the birthmark looks red for a while and gradually fades to light pink. We are hoping to see a big improvement this time. I'll try to include some before and after pics when he is completely healed. The doctor was impressed by how light it was from only 3 treatments. If you look at photos from other posts his face looks pretty good.

Everyone always asks me if it hurts. Well I'm not sure how much it hurts. Ethan seemed very cheery during the whole recovery. This picture is on the way home from the hospital and he is snapin' his fingers and dancing to the music. We only gave him pain killers the first day and then he seemed fine. We even went to Bearlake the next day and he was great.
I always worry about subjecting him to more pain, anesthesia, and procedures. I hope I am doing the right thing. Hopefully some day Ethan will see these pictures and think I made the right choices for him.
Some guy at church asked me why I would put him through all of this, he said "Why don't you just leave him the way heavenly father made him" I thought about saying "Why don't you mind your own damn business." but I was in church after all so I just tried to explain that left untreated a port wine stain can become a medical issue with complications and risk of bleeding. He looked skeptical the whole time, and then asked me, "what's with the scar?" I said "He had brain surgery 2 months again." Then I went back into the chapel. I'd rather wrestle with Ethan in the meeting than try to justify myself to the loser in the forier.

He looks great! What faith and strength you have to endure this process with Ethan and public scrutiny (Amen, sista). Ethan is a lucky boy to have devoted and loving parents!

what a Jerk! I wish you would have said what you were thinking! Sometimes those people need to be kicked in the shins. way to go for being so polite and refined.

I think that you deserve a prize for all the tough decisions you have had to make for Ethan. How are we ever supposed to know what is the right thing to do for someone else, or how it will all turn out? I think you are doing an awesome job!

CAn you make all my decisions? PLEEEZE?

I am so glad that you guys have a blog! I had no idea all that your family has been going through. Wow - you are one strong woman! Also, kudos to your sister for watching your kids while you and Travis went on a much needed get away. Always go with what you feel is best for Ethan and just put it behind you whatever the "public" thinks. They are not the one's involved. Of course you as the parent are going to do what is best for your child - I am always amazed at some people's comments. Hugs to you and your family! We really should get together next time we are in Syracuse.

What a miracle. We love sharing Ethan's miraculous story with our family. Ethan's experience is such an inspiration to us.

I can't believe the comments from the person at church. Who do they think they are??

Mary, As a mother we have been so blessed to have the "divine nature" given to us from our Heavenly Father. When we question our decisions, He will continue to bless our children, through us. Keep up the great work. YOU are an AMAZING mom and a daughter of our Heavenly Father who LOVES you. Love ya.
